Being an animal in Jogja is not a good life. The animals are not cared for and loved like we love them in Australia.

Buddha the Saint Bernard

In my last blog I said that I would try to help him and give him a better life. Because Saint Bernards are a swiss dog I emailed the Swiss embassy to see if the Ambassador would take him and care for him or at least help him but I never heard back from them.

Mum also contacted Animal Friends Jogja (www.animalfriendsjogja.org) who have an Australian volunteer woking with them. But we didn’t hear back from them either.

But apparently they do know about Buddha and have been to see his owner.  If you're an animal lover you may even want to look at their website and think about helping them.  They do a lot of good work like try to stop the dog fighting which is really cruel for dogs. They  have also helped to introduce programs to help care for the horses that pull the carriages that are the local taxies called dokars. So now the horses get massages and extra food.

So Buddha will live and die in that cage. But maybe its a better life than the other 400 dogs a week who are killed to be eaten. The street food stalls (which are called warungs) that sell dog meat have a B1 sign on them so locals know where to go to get their dog meat.

The Bird Market

The bird market is a place in Jogja where locals go to buy all sorts of different animals. There were lots of different birds including baby owls with their feet  strapped to a cage so they couldn’t move at all. There were coloured chickens and lots of different fish such as pirañas, rabbits, puppies and cats.

Mum was worried about taking me because she knew we would see very sad things but because this was part of the local life mum thought I should go.

I didn’t think I would feel sad about it, but once I got there I could see puppies that were crying and so scared to be touched because they think someone is going to hit then or hurt them badly. The puppy in the photo (which I will load later) had just been brought in to the market and when I tried to pat it it moved away, it was very scared and thought I was going to hurt it.

There were older dogs that were so skinny and looked very sick. I worried about their future and how much they would suffer.

My Next Post

Now I am in Bali where I will live for the next 2 years. My next post will be about my first impressions on arriving here and where I’m living and going to school. I love it and can't wait to tell you more.
